This was the final project for Carnegie Mellon's DIY Design and Manufacturing course in Spring 2023. The goal of the project was to "design and fabricate any product of your choice. The product should be something that makes you or someone else happy". I decided to design a 3d print in place gear fidget toy. I went through many different prototypes getting to select the correct clearances before finding the best one.
One of my hobbies is in 3d printing I have printed out many different designs of others but now I wanted to create my own. I decided on a few criteria I had to meet for my final design First, I wanted to include some interesting gears. Something different than the traditional spur gears found in many other items. Second I wanted the product to be printed in one piece with no assembly(Print in place). This was to show off a strength of 3d printing. Creating a weird design that would be very hard or impossible to create otherwise.
I created a couple of initial designs based off of a fidget toy idea that I had before narrowing it down to a 1:2 gear ratio design using herringbone gears. I then made a quick mockup of my captive axial design and printed them out to test.
With my tests successful I then created the entire gear and axial assembly and started testing my tolerances using a parametric input.
With my major subcomponent complete I then moves on to printing out and iterating on a few different designs for the final product as well as further testing of the axial tolerance.
After many different iterations I settled on my final choice and printed it in a few different colors. In addition since I was going to present my projects in an expo I printed out a pile of smaller copies to give out.
I had 2 major design criteria for this project. The first was to use a non spur gear and the second was to no need any assembly. I was able to meet both of these criteria while also creating a product that was useful.
The goal for this project was to create something that we would be happy with. I set out with 2 overall goals in mind and was able to meet both of them.
