TRANSFORMING TAKEOUT

This project was created as a part of Carnegie Mellon's DIY Design and Manufacturing course in Spring 2023. Inspired by products like Chinese food takeout containers. This assignment was to create a paper product that transformed and served a different functions. In addition no glue could be used. Out side of the material requirement the only other criteria was that the product had to transform and have a secondary use.

I started my design process by first drawing many sketches of different designs for each of the different example companies. I then further refined one of ideas and ended up with a decorative box that would also double as a display stand for the item it carried.

With my design selected I then selected one kind of main item to hold in the box. I settled on a cupcake since I was eating one at the time and also because I remember seeing some very decorative displays for baked goods. I had a cupcake mold so I took accurate measurements of that to get the minimum size.

Because no glue could be used my next step was to make a mockup of my connection design . I did this by measuring the thickness of my paper and creating a similar thickness material out of glued cardboard. I did this because my initial connecting design relied heavily on having clearances that would just fit the paper thickness.

With my connecting design complete the last step was to model the rest of the design and create the final piece out of laser cut paper

The 2 main criteria for this project was that it had to be made out of paper and that it had to be able to perform a secondary function. My design was able to accomplish both of these tasks.
